8th Annual President's Invitation to Serve

In keeping with Mount St. Mary’s designation as a Catholic institution with strong emphasis on social and ethical values and in honor of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, we have created a special day in which to serve the community. On one extraordinary day each academic year, the Office of Community Engagement invites faculty, staff, students, administration, Alumnae and friends of the college to gather together for a day of service.

Invitation to Serve is filled to capacity.

Past Invitation to Serve Dates

For our First Annual Invitation to Serve in March 2007, over 50 members of the Mount family volunteered at various places in the Los Angeles community. Some of our volunteers served at the Union Rescue Mission in downtown Los Angeles feeding the homeless. Others could be found at the St. Joseph's Center in Santa Monica helping to create a bright and clean Child Care Center. Lastly, a group volunteered planting trees in the Doheny neighborhood as part of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s Million Tree Campaign.

For our Second Annual Invitation to Serve on March 8, 2008, over 60 members of the Mount family volunteered at various places in the Los Angeles community. Some returned from last years Invitation to Serve while this became a new experience for many other. Such volunteer places included the Regional Food Bank where food was sorted to be given to needy families, St. Francis Center where food baskets were put together and much more, and TreePeople where volunteers planted trees in the Doheny neighborhood.

For our Fourth Annual Invitation to Serve on February 13, 2010, over 80 members participated in our themed "Put your heart into it" day. Mount family, students, alums, faculty, staff, and friends of the college volunteered at various sites. We returned to the Regional Food Bank and participated in their "Single's Day" where single volunteers were able to sort donations out side by side with one another. Others planted trees near the Doheny neighborhood with Korean Youth Community Center while other volunteers learned about homelessness and sorted through donations at the Downtown Women's Center.

Our first group started the day at 6:30 in the morning preparing a hot meal for the poor and homeless that would be served later in the morning. Our second group went to various locations. For our fourth year in a row, we returned to Regional Food Bank and sorted out donations that would be given to needy families.
