Ann McElaney-Johnson became the 12th president of Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles on July 2, 2011. She is passionate about the importance of women’s colleges, and a strong advocate for women’s education and leadership issues, and has a deep appreciation for the Catholic intellectual tradition.
She has presented on issues related to women at a variety of conferences, including the Milken Institute 2013 Global Conference, the American Council on Education in Washington, D.C., and the International Women’s Festival in Santa Barbara, California. She was the recipient of the YWCA Woman of Vision Award in 2010.
Dr. McElaney-Johnson has over 25 years of service to small, residential liberal arts colleges, as a faculty member, associate dean and chief academic and student affairs officer. She previously served in a variety of leadership positions at Salem College, North Carolina, both as an administrator and a faculty member. Prior to her tenure at Salem College, she served as a faculty member and coordinator of faculty development at Ripon College, Wisconsin.
She earned her Ph.D. in French from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, her Master’s degree in French from Middlebury College, Vermont, and her Bachelor of Arts from the College of the Holy Cross, Massachusetts. Her research interests focus on Francophone women writers in Sub-Saharan Africa and she has presented her work at both domestic and international conferences.
McElaney-Johnson is a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU); a member of the Board of Directors of Portmont College at Mount St. Mary’s; a member of the Board of Trustees of the College of the Holy Cross; and a member of the Board of Directors of Marymount High School. She previously served as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Southern Association for Colleges and Universities’ Commission on Colleges.
Dr. McElaney-Johnson is married to David Johnson, and has three grown daughters, Emma, Rachel and Caroline.
