Nancy Pine, founder and first director of the Bridging Cultures: U.S./China Program, has over 20 years of research and consulting experience in China’s schools and colleges. Her studies focus on how children and young adults learn in China and the United States. The following China Images essays are her reflections on some of her experiences in urban and rural China. Additional writings about her time spent in China can be found at www.nancypine.com and in her book, Educating Young Giants: What Kids Learn (And Don’t Learn) in China and America published by Palgrave Macmillan. Although two of the essays, “Telecommunications” and “From Bicycles to VWs,” are now dated, they provide a window into China just a few years ago.
