Biography

Dr. Gregory Travis, Director of Graduate Psychology, attended Occidental College as an Economics major. He coincidently attended at the same time as Barack “Barry” Obama and attended the future President’s first campus wide speech. In his senior year he participated in an internship at a community-based social service agency, working as a volunteer receptionist in the Counseling Department. While in this position he interacted with many graduate level counseling interns, and was inspired to change his career path and pursue graduate work in Psychology. For his graduate studies he attended USC ’s Counseling Psychology Program where he earned his PhD, writing his dissertation on “The Utilization of Psychotherapy Research by Practicing Psychologists.

Upon graduation, Greg worked in a variety of places including: working in a private practice setting, first as a Psych Assistant before setting up his independent Counseling & Consultation practice; teaching part-time through UCLA’s Alcohol and Drug Study Program; and working at a variety of community based agencies including the Department of Mental Health, County of Los Angeles and the AIDS Prevention Clinic at the Gay and Lesbian Community Services Center. Greg is currently a licensed Psychologist in the state of California.

Greg started teaching at the Mount in the Fall of 2002, teaching courses for the undergraduate, graduate and weekend college programs. His favorite class to teach is Introduction to Psychology because he can excite new incoming students about the field of Psychology in a very engaging and thoughtful way. Taking on the Director of Graduate Psychology Position in 2009, Greg is currently a tenure track assistant professor and maintains a small private practice.  “What I am enjoying most about being the Director of the Graduate Psychology is the creativity involved in fine-tuning the current MFT specialization as well as creating new specializations for our graduate program.

In his spare time Greg earned a certificate in Gardening and Horticulture via UCLA Extension. He enjoys designing and maintaining a California garden as well as updating with his partner their 1908 Arts and Crafts bungalow in the West Adams area of Los Angeles. Greg is also an active member of Southern Californian Aquatics Master’s Swim Team and has completed several ocean swims.
