I think English courses are all about two things: 1) learning to write well and 2) analyzing what you read to try to understand human nature better. Why is this so important? Well, how you write—how you express your thoughts and ideas—says a lot about you, positively or negatively. And as far as understanding human nature better, isn’t that a huge asset in whatever job you’ll eventually have? My teaching style is less about memorizing rules than learning how to analyze and think. And I believe that I can help you with all this because I am a writer myself. Although I have written for magazines, most of my professional writing has been for television and movies. In television I wrote a lot of sitcoms such as Growing Pains, Martin, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. I’ve also worked with and written for Christina Aguilera, Brittany Spears, Justin Timberlake and Kerri Russell, which gave me a pretty good insight into what makes your age group tick. One final thought: studying English literature should be fun. You actually get college credit for reading great stories with great characters! Not a bad deal.
