Founded in 1925 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, Mount St. Mary's College is an independent,
Catholic, liberal arts college, primarily for women. The college has two
campuses: the Chalon Campus in the Santa Monica Mountains of West Los Angeles
and the Doheny Campus in downtown Los Angeles on the site of the historic
Doheny estate. The Chalon Campus offers baccalaureate degree programs, including
a Weekend College for working adults. Associate of arts and graduate degree
programs are offered on the Doheny Campus.
Teacher preparation programs are available for undergraduate and graduate
students interested in becoming teachers. Students may pursue education
certificate and credential programs in early childhood, elementary, secondary,
and special education. An administrative leadership credential program is
available at the graduate level. Many graduate students choose to complete
a masters degree in conjunction with their credential program.
Under the leadership of Sister Magdalen Coughlin and others, the college
has become a national model of multicultural education. The Center of Cultural
Fluency continues the college's tradition of commitment to inclusive education.
