Phi Lambda is a chapter of The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International. The vision of Sigma Theta Tau International is to create a global community of nurses who lead in using knowledge, scholarship, service and learning to improve the health of the world?s people. Phi Lambda Membership is more than an academic destination; it's a rewarding connection with nurses at the local, regional, and international levels who share a passion to make a difference in the health of the world's people. This global community of nurses has never been more important than it is today as we work together to assure a bright future for the nursing profession. Phi Lambda will help you help others, whether through professional development, career resources, or community involvement at the local level or beyond.
In June of 2009, the Mount St Mary?s Nursing Honor Society was founded, with the mission of recognizing the value of excellence in nursing, the value of community service, and the importance of becoming an active part of the nursing community through education, research, and practice. It was at this time that the NHS began working towards establishing a Sigma Theta Tau International chapter at Mount St. Mary?s. The Phi Lambda Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International was established on June 18, 2011. Carol Huston, MSN, MPA, DPA, FAAN, past president of Sigma Theta Tau International and the current chair of the International Leadership Succession Committee, conducted the chartering ceremony and first induction at Rose Hills Auditorium on the Doheny Campus.
The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to improve the health of people worldwide through leadership and scholarship in practice, education and research. Membership in the honor society is by invitation to baccalaureate and graduate nursing students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, and to nurse leaders who demonstrate exceptional achievement in nursing. Sigma Theta Tau International was founded in 1922 and currently has 134,000 active members in more than 90 countries. Members include practicing nurses, instructors, researchers, policymakers, entrepreneurs and others.
If you are a student, new membership is achieved through invitation, based on the eligibility requirements set by Sigma Theta Tau International (see above for requirements for membership). STTI exception clause states that 10% of the inductees from each year are allowed to fall outside the traditional eligibility requirements. Inductees that fall under this clause will be invited for membership based on a combination of involvement in Phi Lambda and Nursing Honor Society events, academic standing, and commitment to the nursing community. If you are not a student and want to qualify for membership within the nurse leader category, you can apply online at: http://www.nursingsociety.org/Membership/ApplyNow
Invitations are sent out in the spring, before our annual induction ceremony.
If you are already a member of Sigma Theta Tau, you can transfer your membership to Phi Lambda Chapter or add Phi Lambda Chapter as an additional membership. The best way to do this is to call the Sigma Theta Tau International offices at 1.888.634.7575 and talk with a call center representative.
