Instructional Leadership: M.S. Degree and Certificate Program

Have you been teaching for two or more years? Would you like to develop your skills as a teacher leader?

M.S. Degree in Education with a Specialization in Instructional Leadership

The Instructional Leadership Masters Degree is a 30-unit program that prepares experienced teachers to become teacher leaders on campus. You will refine your pedagogy and curriculum development skills and develop the leadership skills required for coaching, mentoring, and providing professional development. Electives include courses on effective strategies for engaging parents, National Board Certification preparation, grant writing for classroom resources, and Clear Credential courses. The culminating activity is an inquiry project that you conduct in your own classroom or school, putting into practice the skills you have developed. The program can be completed in five semesters or at your own pace.

Electives (12 units) 
While elective courses may be selected from any of the MSMC graduate education course offerings, the following courses are recommended. Teachers may choose to clear their preliminary credential while completing the masters degree. Teachers may also apply for transfer of up to six units of graduate credit for course taken in their content area at other accredited institutions of higher education.

Certificate in Inclusive and Responsive Teaching (CIRT)

Candidates enrolling in the Instructional Leadership (IL) masters program are eligible to concurrently earn the Certificate in Inclusive and Responsive Teaching (CIRT) without taking any additional units beyond the 30 required for the IL masters degree. This certificate program invites you to improve both your marketability and classroom practice. Approved elective courses focus on expanding skills related to working with students with diverse special needs. This 12-unit program can be fully embedded within your masters program when you select electives from the following set of approved courses:

Certificate in Instructional Leadership

This 15-unit certificate program offers fully credentialed teachers the same core courses as those in the M.S. in Education/Instructional Leadership (see above), plus one additional elective. This program -- which can be completed in one year, or at your own pace -- is ideal for veteran educators with Masters degrees hoping to bring teacher leadership skills to their classrooms and school sites.

GOAL #3  A Mount St. Mary's graduate candidate will demonstrate research skills and methods through the ability to gather, document, investigate, analyze, interpret and evaluate information.

  • Instructional Leadership masters candidates will design and implement sound teacher inquiry activities that demonstrate competent research skills and methods that give evidence of gathering, documenting, investigating, analyzing, interpreting and evaluating information.
