Perspectives on Teaching and Learning Chinese Literacy in China

Nancy Pine, Professor Emerita in the Education Department and founder of the Bridging Cultures: U.S./China Program, has a new chapter out. “Early Literacy Education in China: A Historical Overview” is in Perspectives on Teaching and Learning Chinese Literacy in China (Springer 2012). Researched and written in collaboration with her Chinese colleague, Zhenyou Yu, the chapter traces the development of how Chinese children have been taught to read and write throughout Chinese history—from the ancient eras, through the upheavals of 20th century China, to the present.
