Celebrations

Alum DPT 2007 (Brian McConnell) is engaged to his long time girlfriend, Kimberly Davis. The wedding will be in September 2008.

Jasmine RiehlAlum DPT 2006 (Jasmine Riehl in the photo) will serve as an associate member for the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy. She’s currently working full time at the VA Medical Center, Part-time at Rapid Rehab International in Brentwood, CA and teaching anatomy and physiology for the MSMC ADN program. She is engaged to Frank Jimeno. They’re getting married at the Hawaiian Prince Resort in Waikiki, Hawaii on the island of Oahu on January 21, 2009.

Alum DPT 2006 (Melia Perrizo) will be getting married on March 29, 2008 (after being engaged since the weekend after MSMC Graduation, October 14, 2006). She graduated in December 2007, from the year-long, Kaiser Orthopedic Residency.

Alum DPT 2006 (Summer Somple) and her boyfriend Mike Pountney were engaged last March and they will be getting married in San Diego, CA in September 2008.

Alum DPT 2006 (Allison Ulbrich) is getting married May 3, 2008 to Peter Oswald.

Alum MPT 2003 (Jill Trato) received her NCS Award at APTA CSM 2008.

Alumni MPT 2003 (Lisa Fairchild, Steve Gaskill) received their OCS Awards at APTA CSM 2008.

Alumni MPT 2002 (Bryan Dennison, Michael Leal) received their OCS Awards at APTA CSM 2008.

Alum MPT 1995 (Douglas Chong) received his OCS Award at APTA CSM 2008. Alum MPT 1995 (Catherine Clarke Kerman) received her PCS Award at APTA CSM 2008.

Craig B. SandersAlum MPT 1994 (Craig B. Sanders) completed his DPT at Des Moines University and graduated in May 2006. He is currently residing in Dallas, Texas with his family.

Alum MPT 1993 (Elizabeth Byrne) received her OCS Award at APTA CSM 2008.

Department News

MSMC Graduate Student Housing opened its doors to DPT students in 2007. Currently, there are 3 DPT students living on campus.

MSMC Doheny Parking Structure ground breaking started in January 2008. Stay tuned for the completion date for this parking expansion on campus.

Volunteer Pediatric Rehabilitation sessions in Hospital Infantil de las Californias in Tijuana, Mexico.

MSMC DPT FacultyMSMC DPT Faculty joined MSMC DPT students at the PT Legislative Day on April 1, 2008.

Dr. Lowe and Professor Kubota attended the PT Legislative Day as well. 

Renee Cordrey, PT, MPH, CWS presented her international wound care experience in a 1.5 hour presentation titled, "International Experiences in Wound Management - India and Cambodia," at the APTA Combined Sections Meeting (CSM) 2008 in Nashville, TN.

Daniel Kirages, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT gave a 3-hour presentation titled, "Don't Be Afraid of Treating the Male Pelvic Floor," at the APTA CSM 2008. It was a co-sponsored program between the orthopaedic section and the section on women’s health.

Jason Tonley, DPT, OCS presented his orthopedic special interest platform presentation titled, "Treatment of an Individual With Piriformis Syndrome Focusing on Hip Muscle Strengthening and Movement Re-education: A Case Report," at APTA CSM 2008.

Jacob Lawrence SuekiJacob Lawrence Sueki was born on January 19, 2008 and joined Dr. Derrick Sueki's family.

Jacob is on the 1st and 3rd column photos while his big sister (Summer) is on the 2nd and 4th column photos with proud parents.

Taylor Anne McCarthy was born on December 8, 2007 and joined Professor Michelle McCarthy's family.

Naomi Lynn Wagner was born on February 5, 2008 and joined Dr. Amy Wagner's family.

Stephany Comee, MPT recently got married on February 2, 2008 to Damon Tritt.

DPT III

Prathima Reddy and Akemi RicoPrathima Reddy and Akemi Rico volunteered in a hospital called "Nepal Matri Griha," located just north of Kathmandu in Gongabu. Pri and Akemi were there for a month during winter break- mid December through the first week of January 2008. The DPT IIIs assisted patients with cerebral palsy, spina bifida, spinal cord injury, and developmental delay.

The hospital is a privately funded non-governmental organization that provides free schooling and physiotherapy treatment to adults and children. They also provide housing for some of the children who are orphans, and for people who come from rural areas.

DPT II

Jonathan ZimmermanJonathan Zimmerman was awarded a scholarship from Birthright Israel to tour Israel from December 31, 2007 - January 13, 2008. He toured throughout Israel under the guidance of Israeli citizens and IDF (Israeli Defense Force) soldiers. He visited numerous ancient historical sites, military bases, slept in Bedouin tents in the desert, and celebrated Shabbat at the Kotel (the western wall of the first temple), the holiest place in the Jewish religion.
