Celebrations

DPT Class of 2007 (Stacy Suyama) won the 2007 National Championships and qualified for the World US Team.

She completed the World competition in September 2007 and we are all proud of her accomplishments. Congratulations and good luck with your clinical practice.

Other News

Engagements - Summer Somple (DPT Class of 2006) and Mike (Pountney) and Kai Somple (DPT Class of 2006) and Bryan (Marcus)are engaged. Summer and Mike got engaged on March 9th and Bryan and Kai got engaged on March 31st. They both plan on getting married in mid-late 2008. Congratulations to the Somple Family.

Johnnie HarrisonMSMC DPT Student, Johnnie Harrison on the right, attended a CPTA PAC Luncheon with Mike Eng, Assemblyman representing the 49th Assembly District. A financial support from a DPT faculty allowed two DPT students (Johnnie Harrison & Chris Lanski) to attend the event.

Seasons GreetingsFROM THE DEPARTMENT: During this holiday season our thoughts turn gratefully to those who have made our progress possible. As another year draws to a close, the Department of Physical Therapy pauses to remember our students, faculty and alumni to wish them peace, health, good cheer and much prosperity. May peace and joy be yours during the holiday season and through the New Year!

Anatomy Lab moved into the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation Anatomy Lab in Doheny Campus (C116B, next to DPT Dept. Office). The Class of 2010 is inaugurating the lab this semester.

Volunteer Pediatric Rehabilitation Day in Mexico - DPT faculty & students volunteered their services to children with special needs at Hospital Infantil de las Californias in Tijuana, Mexico, September 22, 2007.

Next event date is: December 15, 2007.

Clinical Capstone CeremonyClinical Capstone Ceremony - The DPT faculty presented MSMC DPT lapel pins for white coats to each DPT II student at the 2nd Clinical Capstone Ceremony on October 26, 2007.

The guest speaker was Johan Otter, PT, OCS, Administrative Director of Ancillary & Specialty Services at Scripps Memorial Hospital in San Diego.

Faculty News

Dr. Julia Chang, PhD was awarded the Faculty of the Year Award from the MSMC & Associated Student Body in 2006-2007. Congratulations on serving the undergraduate and graduate students of MSMC.

Nancy HaradaDr. Nancy Harada, PT, PhD presented the initial finding of the telehealth study at the UCLA Center on Aging annual research conference in June, 2007.

Susie Mais-Requejo Dr. Susie Mais-Requejo, DPT, OCS and family welcomed a new baby boy (Austin) to their home.

Others: Petra Place had a baby girl and William Lee, PT had their first born (Addison), Dr. Daniel Kirages, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT had a boy (Lucas Daniel) in 2007.

Professor Renee Cordrey, PT, MPH, CWS, was awarded the AAWC's Distinguished Member award in 2007. She is serving a 3-year term on the item-bank review committee of the FSBPT.

Dr. Derrick Sueki, DPT, GCPT, OCS is serving as an editor for a textbook entitled, "Orthopedic Rehabiliation Clinical Advisor," from Elsevier Publishers.

DPT BBQ & First Annual DPT Softball Game - MSMC DPT students, faculty, staff and family hosted its 1st DPT Students & Faculty Softball game on July 14, 2007 (Frank D. Lanterman's grass field next to our DPT campus). The game was held on a nice sunny afternoon followed by a BBQ welcoming the incoming DPT Is (first year students).

CPTA Annual ConferenceCPTA Annual Conference in Los Angeles, CA - MSMC DPT Students (Sachie Maeda, Karlyn Schiltgen, W. Patrick Kollmyer and Jennifer Wells) enjoying the CPTA Annual Conference 2007.

Volunteer Pediatric Rehabilitation Day - DPT students volunteered their services to children with special needs at Hospital Infantil de las Californias in Tijuana, Mexico, September 22, 2007. DPT students assisted clinicians (PT, OT, ST, CPO) providing home programs and fitting children for durable medical equipment that were donated.

APTA Student Conclave 2007

APTA Student ConclaveAPTA Student Conclave MSMC DPT students attended the APTA Student Conclave in Valley Forge, PA on October 26-28, 2007. DPT students (Emily Whalen, Akemi Rico and Lindsay Turpin, Cristina Bracamonte (not in photo) enjoyed the conference and the favors of Philly.

DPT III

Scripps Kensington Assisted Living FacilityDPT IIIs (third year students) provided wellness fitness screening to retired older adults at Scripps Kensington Assisted Living Facility on September 24, 2007.

CSJ Cognitive Screening - DPT IIIs provided cognitive and depression screenings at the Chalon Campus for retired Sisters of St. Joseph's of Carondelet, on November 12, 2007.

Engagement - Oliver Severios and Sarah Ninness were engaged in the Fall semester of their third year program. The faculty and students congratulated their new engagement.

DPT II

DPT II students ran in the Nike Run Hit Remix event on September 15th. The 5-mile course on Figueroa St. concluded in the L.A. Coliseum with a concert by MC Hammer. The event also featured artists: Naughty by Nature, the Sugarhill Gang, Dawn Robinson from En Vogue, and Sir Mix-A-Lot.

October PT MONTH - DPT II students joined the Department of Physical Therapy and Commuter Services in celebrating Physical Therapy Month at MSMC. Information and education from DPT II students were given on stretching, ergonomics, stress relief/massage, and injury care to the MSMC students, staff, and community.
