APTA Federal Advocacy ForumMSMC DPT Alum (Chris Lanski) attended the APTA Federal Advocacy Forum in Washington DC April 25-27, 2010 as a CPTA student representative.

Christopher Lanski Each year the APTA holds their Federal Advocacy Forum in Alexandria, VA. This past April, DPT student Christopher Lanski was sponsored by the California Physical Therapy Association to attend. Christopher joined five outstanding CPTA members to take on the task of meeting with the offices of both Senators and 53 Californian Representatives, including Christopher’s hometown Congressman Kevin McCarthy (R- Lancaster/Bakersfield) and Congressman Xavier Becerra (D- Los Angeles).

This three-day event educates attendees on the most recent legislation affecting the profession. There are presentations from APTA’s national headquarters, great bonding activities with fellow PT’s and students, esteemed guest speakers advocating for physical therapy, and interactive learning sessions. One of the breakout sessions even puts attendees in the shoes of a Representative by requiring them to make decisions over a simulated two-year term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The event culminates with Capitol Hill Day, in which physical therapists and students meet with state senators, representatives, and key staff contacts in an effort to further the practice of physical therapy across the nation. This year’s legislative agenda includes:

  • Permanent repeal of the Medicare therapy cap,
  • Direct access for Medicare beneficiaries,
  • Student loan repayment with the NHSC, and
  • Improving PT services for our veterans.

This annual event is truly a great experience and provides insight on the inner workings of both the APTA and our political system. Thank you to the CPTA for their generosity and sponsorship of Christopher’s attendance.

Interesting fact: Politicians love hearing from their constituents and students. Please write your elected officials asking them to support and sponsor bills that catch your interest.
