Mount Presents Opening of 'So Close and yet so far' Art Exhibit

Feb. 3, 2012 -- The José Drudis-Biada Gallery at Mount St. Mary’s College is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition “So Close And Yet So Far,” opening Feb. 7.

Curated by Irina D. Costache, the show is a reflection on art’s encompassing diversities and inherent mysteries. The overt and striking contrasts aim to partially elucidate the meaning. Moving images and still narratives, painterly canvases and textured mass, traditional materials and new media form a new story that appears easy to grasp and yet is hard to fully comprehend.

All four artists in this exhibition, Victoria Loschuk, Rebeca Méndez, Melinda Smith Altshuler and Jon Swihart, live and create in the same city: Los Angeles. Their art, however, takes them on numerous and different journeys: some distant, other intensely near. Méndez travels the world to record and reflect on nature from afar and up close, and her work transcends a disquieting and almost unattainable primordial tranquility.

Loschuk’s work cleverly uses focus as a physical, visual and conceptual tool to create subtle spatial uncertainty and an eerie luminosity. Smith Altshuler’s work brings a celestial dimension, but the dissonance between intangible and tactile creates a terrestrial framework of inquiry. Swihart’s paintings surprise viewers with their unexpected size and mesmerizing illusionism infused with a sense of nostalgia and reverie.

The paths established among the artists, their individual visual and conceptual destinations and the final materialization in the works of art are not always overtly displayed. “So Close And Yet So Far” also aims to reflect on art’s ability to act as a unifying “macro lens” that continuously re-arranges and re-connects time and space.

The show opens Feb. 7 and closes March 24. A public reception is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19. The gallery will be closed during spring break, March 5 to 13.
