MSMC Offers New MBA Focus in High-Demand Project Management
May 8, 2012 -- The MBA program at Mount St. Mary’s College announces a new concentration in Project Management that provides a foundation in the initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, controlling and closing of projects. The new concentration offers students an option for a special certification in the field — a big plus in a competitive job market. Key areas of focus include communication, leadership, effective team management and applied critical thinking skills.
Courses are integrated with the Project Management Institute, Inc. (PMI) and utilize A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®, Guide) for coursework and assignments. The concentration coursework prepares students for the Project Management certification exam – a key opportunity for those looking to add professional certification to their résumés. Faculty who teach the concentration classes are certificated as Project Management Professionals (PMP) by the Institute.
“The project management discipline is currently identified as the most in-demand skill set globally by several national publications,” said William T. Huddleston, a retired NASA program manager and lead faculty member in the new concentration. “With the poor economic condition of our country, MBA students will be able to graduate with not only an MBA but also a certification by a professional organization creating a distinct advantage in competing for hard-to-fill positions due to the current global skill shortage,” he added.
Project management skills are applicable to almost any job and across all industries. The concentration begins with the MBA’s fall 2012 cohort. “We are pleased to offer this concentration as Mount St. Mary’s MBA program continues to stretch and grow,” said MBA program Director Janet Robinson. “The Project Management concentration provides yet another real-world capability for our students looking to excel in business today.”
Mount St. Mary’s launched its MBA program in 2008. The program is offered in a weekend format to those with a bachelor’s degree in any field. Classes are held at the Doheny Campus in the heart of Los Angeles. All students participate in a 10-day international travel-study course to China as part of their MBA curriculum.
A Mount MBA replaces the traditional course-by-course master’s curriculum with theme-based modules. By blending business disciplines that are traditionally kept separate — marketing, finance and business law — students develop a “big picture” view of how disciplines come together in the actual business environment. The degree culminates in a real-world final consulting project from an organization of the student’s choice.
