Los Angeles / Jan. 17, 2013 — Mount St. Mary’s College will offer six dates this year for public tours of its iconic 1899 Doheny Mansion and the historic Chester Place grounds and homes that have housed the College’s downtown campus since 1962.
The first tours will be offered on Jan. 26 at 9:45 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. All tours of the historic homes of Chester Place are led by trained docents, and conclude in the Doheny Mansion. A complete tour lasts about 2½ hours. Rates this year have been reduced from $25 to $20 per person; proceeds support mansion conservation. Private tours are also available.
Public tours of Chester Place and Doheny Mansion are available in 2013 on Jan. 26, March 2, May 11, July 27, Oct. 5 and Nov. 30.
Home to the Doheny family for nearly 60 years, the Doheny Mansion was built in 1899 for the Oliver P. Posey family by architects Theodore Eisen and Sumner Hunt. Its eclectic Romantic Revival exterior unites elements of Gothic, Chateauesque, Moorish and even California Mission styles. The opulent interior reflects the wealth and status of pioneering oil baron Edward L. Doheny, who purchased the mansion in 1901 and, with his wife Estelle, led a fascinating life within its walls.
Left to the stewardship of Mount St. Mary's College, the Doheny Mansion and all of the surrounding properties on historic Chester Place — Los Angeles’ first “gated community” — now form the College’s downtown campus. Prominent art is displayed inside the Mansion, concerts are frequently hosted beneath the Pompeian Room’s Tiffany glass dome, and production companies often use the Mansion to shoot films, television shows and commercials.
To learn more about the Dohenys, read “The Doheny Mansion: A Biography of a Home,” by mansion curator MaryAnn Bonino. All proceeds from book sales go toward mansion conservation. The book is available for purchase through dacamera.org. “Los Angeles’s Chester Place,” an Images of America book by Don Sloper, is also available on Amazon.com.
