Display Space Available
Wed like to remind you that the McCarthy Library on the Doheny Campus has large display cases that are available for the display of student work. If youd like to show off your students work, contact Mary Kranz at x2751 to arrange a mutually agreeable time frame and to reserve an appropriate amount of space.
Weeding
It seems we mention this in every issue of Library Notes, but we mention it because its very important. We know we sound a bit like a broken record, but we really do need your help in weeding the collection. We dont want to dispose of classics or materials that may be of future value, but wed appreciate your assistance in determining what materials in your area of expertise are providing outdated or incorrect information and really should be removed from the shelves. (Think: Do I want my students using this book?) We have stylish carts that match the Library decor available for your use. Just let one of us know youre here, and start weeding. Were still offering Library pens as a reward for helping us. The pens are thick but lightweight, making for especially comfortable writing. Theyre also neutral in color and very attractive. Having one shows that youve done your part!
Research Resources
As you know, we offer class presentations designed to complement the needs of your classes. Please contact a Reference/Public Service Librarian to schedule a session tailored to your needs. We also create Pathfinders to assist users in finding material in various disciplines. If you have a particular subject youd like to see in a Pathfinder, let us know.We are also happy to spend time with individual faculty, staff and students to acquaint or reacquaint them with our resources. Wed appreciate at least one weeks notice on class presentations to facilitate the preparation of appropriate handouts. A similar amount of time would facilitate the creation of a good Pathfinder.
Library Surveys
We will be conducting our annual Information Literacy survey beginning March 22. Faculty will be asked to assess general student success with finding information in the Library, and students will be asked to rate their comfort level using library resources. As in the past, we will have candy as a thank-you for everyone who helps us by filling out a survey. We will e-mail a copy to all faculty, and a form will be available on our website, but you are also invited to come into either Library to fill out a form. (If you print your form and mail it to us or submit via the web, just let us know you deserve a piece of candy when you do come in!) Your help is greatly appreciated.

Highlighted Database: CQ LIBRARY
The Congressional Quarterly databases have been available to the Mount St. Marys College community for some time. However, this year, CQ Library has added two new databases. As well as The CQ Researcher Online, CQ Supreme Court Collection, and CQ Public Affairs Collection, we now have access to CQ Voting and Elections Collection and CQ Congress Collection.
CQ Voting and Elections Collection
integrates a wealth of data, authoritative analyses, concise explanations, and historical material to help researchers investigate and understand voting and elections in America. Categories to search or browse include "Presidential Elections," "Congressional Elections," "Gubernatorial Elections," "Campaigns and Elections," "Political Parties," and "Voters and Demographics."
CQ Researcher Online
is an award-winning source of original, comprehensive reporting and analysis on issues in the news. Recent reports include "The Search for Extraterrestrials," "Exporting Jobs," "Youth Suicide," "Mental Illness Medication Debate," "Democracy in the Arab World," "Advertising Overload," and "Stock Market Troubles." News currently features "Mayor Charged Over Gay Marriages," "Super-Size Too Large for McDonalds," and "Former WorldCom Boss Indicted." Expected are "Redistricting," "Reforming College Sports," and "Human Trafficking." Both searches and browses are available.
CQ Congress Collection
is a dynamic, data-rich research and reference tool allowing a sweeping historical analysis of members of Congress, their legislative voting behavior, interest groups, and their interactions in crafting public policy. The database can be browsed or searched and includes key categories of "Public Policy Legislation", "CQ Key Votes", "Members of Congress" and "The Legislative Branch." Also included are a "Congressional Dictionary", a "Congressional Encyclopedia" and a "Chronology."
CQ Supreme Court Collection
blends historical analysis with timely updates and expert commentary of Supreme Court decisions, biographies of Supreme Court justices, Supreme Court institutional history, and the U.S. Constitution. The database can be browsed or searched and includes a "Case Finder," a "Justice Finder," a "Subject Finder" and "CQ Cases-in-Context," which offers guidance for searches on Abortion, Capital Punishment, Education: Desegregation, Environmental Protection, Federalism, Free Exercise of Religion, Sex Discrimination (non-employment) and Speech, Press, and Assembly.
CQ Public Affairs Collection
is a storehouse of public policy content organized by 22 key topics. It pulls together CQs wealth of historic documents and primary source materials, statistical overviews, directory contact information, and in-depth reporting on current affairs. There is a "Hot Topics" button as well as information covering Advocacy & Public Service, Agriculture & Nutrition, Business, Banking, Commerce & Economics, Communications & the Media, Culture & Recreation, Education, Employment & Natural Resources, Federal Budget & Tax Policy, General Government & Civil Service, Health, Housing & Development, International Affairs, International Trade & Development, Law & Justice, Military Personnel & Veterans, National Security, Science & Technology, Social Services & Disabilities, Transportation and U.S. Congress & Politics.
