Social Justice & Community Service Opportunities
You must be the change you wish to see in the world. - Gandhi
MSMC students and staff are known for service to others.
The Catholic tradition of our college emphasizes that work for the common good through service and political participation are essential aspects of being a fully human, educated person.
Visiting our homeless brothers and sisters

Fair Trade
In March of 2006 we learned about Fair Trade and how if affects our lives. Our guest speakerswere Michael Sheridan, the Fair Trade Program Officer for Catholic Relief Services, and Krissy Maier, the Campus Contact for Pura Vida, a Fair Trade coffee company. They shared howwe can make the world a better place in our choices of whatwe eat, drink, wear and buy, and the conditions for women who work to grow and create the products we buy.
Did you know that our Food Services department, run by Bon Appetit, sells 100% Fair Trade coffee and iced teas from Pura Vida? That means the people who are growing the coffee beans and tea leaves are getting a fair price for their products, have better working conditions, and the dignity of knowing that they helped to negotiate the price and the conditions. By drinking the coffee and teas, we support our global neighbors and fair trade.
See where you can buy other Fair Trade products here.
Political Action/Human Rights
Throughout the year we help the college to reflect act upon our political rights and responsibilities in light of Catholic social teaching. This includes registering students and others to vote, educating the college community about issues and avenues for action, and collaborating with other groups that advocate for human rights and social justice.
Throughout the year we help the college to reflect act upon our political rights and responsibilities in light of Catholic social teaching. This includes registering students and others to vote, educating the college community about issues and avenues for action, and collaborating with other groups that advocate for human rights and social justice.
Voting is a right and a responsibility! Register on campus during the election seasons at tables around campus, or anytime in the Women's Leadership offices.
Get On the Bus
Occurs on the Friday before Mother's Day.
The mission of the community of St. Joseph is to serve a world in need. The CSJ community in the Los Angeles province has contributed more than any other identifiable group to the success of the Get on the Bus (GOTB) program. GOTB is a non-profit ministry now sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph Ministerial Services. The Get on the Bus program has grown from one bus, one city, to ten buses, ten cities throughout California -- and still growing! You can help! Your donation will bring a child to visit his/her mother in May to celebrate Mothers Day. Send to: Get on the Bus, 3424 Wilshire Blvd, 2nd Floor, Los Angeles, CA 90010 213.637.7456.
