Blurring The Boundaries

Color inside the lines. Do not leave the designated area. Use only a No. 2 pencil. Have you ever noticed that much of your education so far has focused on staying within clearly defined boundaries?

Well, here’s where it gets interesting. At Mount St. Mary’s, we encourage our students to think without limits, to consider possibilities outside the obvious, to blur the boundaries. At the Mount, you might find that you are discussing ethics in a biology class, or entrepreneurship in an English class. You might suddenly see an issue in a whole new way or discover an interest you never knew you had. People don't always fit in closely defined categories, either, so you might find that a professor can also be a friend or mentor, or that you have a lot in common with a classmate who once seemed very different from you. And pretty soon you'll start to see yourself in a whole new way, too, because at the Mount, perhaps the greatest distinction we blur is the one between becoming and being.

Leading women

For most women, the idea of limitless options is a fairly recent one, emerging only in the last two generations. But as a college for women, Mount St. Mary’s has been connecting women to a world of infinite possibilities since our founding. So when we say that we are “a leading women’s college,” we mean it two ways. We are a leader in educating women — and our graduates are leaders, too, in fields from medicine to music.

A mission to serve

If you had to choose, would you rather attend a college with a rich and respected educational tradition dating back centuries or one that innovates and inspires its students to serve in new and different ways?

You don’t have to choose. Mount St. Mary’s offers both. Our Catholic mission and identity mean that we are connected to one of the oldest university traditions in the world — but also driven to serve the modern world in ever more meaningful ways.

The Mount welcomes and nurtures students of all faiths, and we give each of our students two powerful gifts: the deep roots that come with tradition and the strong wings that allow innovation.

It’s not a movie, it’s your life.

If you think studying filmmaking sounds like fun, you’re right. Just ask any of the students taking part in the Mount’s new Documentary Film and Social Justice program. Working with talented faculty, these students learn the fundamentals of filmmaking while creating their own documentaries aimed at promoting social change.

But the excitement of making a film is secondary to what the program really achieves, say the Mount’s faculty members. “This program is designed to empower students to use their their knowledge and skills to address significant social concerns,” says Dr. Pam Haldeman, one of the program’s founders. “The program also facilitates a deeper understanding and awareness of issues in the community at large.”

The program also features presentations by noted filmmakers and an annual Human Rights Film Festival, which screens some of the most powerful documentaries being produced today.

Why the Liberal Arts?

How do you know when you have learned something? Is it when you know all the right answers? That’s what some schools believe. But at Mount St. Mary’s, we focus less on finding the right answers and more on finding the right questions. That’s because we see learning as a process, a way of traveling through the world, not a one-way street to a set of simple answers.

A Mount education is an education in the liberal arts. That means you’ll gain broad exposure to ideas in a wide range of fields, from philosophy to physical science. You’ll also gain depth of knowledge in your chosen field, and prepare to make a difference in your career and community. But perhaps most of all, a liberal arts education at Mount St. Mary’s will give you the skills and habits of an educated person: the ability to communicate effectively, to solve problems, to work cooperatively, to analyze data, and, of course, to ask all the right questions.

One Big Classroom

As beautiful as our campuses are, and as well-equipped as our classrooms and labs, at the Mount, we don’t want students to think that learning ends with our walls. Through programs ranging from international studies around the globe to community service just across town, we invite our student to see the world as their classroom.

“My program was fascinating. I interned with the U.S. Marshal service in D.C. Superior Court. It taught me a lot about what I would like to pursue, which is definitely not corrections, but rather rehabilitation.”

— Terry Johnson, criminal justice and Spanish major, participant in the Washington Semester Program.

Writing the book on Los Angeles

If literature isn’t the first thing you associate with the city of Los Angeles, you are not alone. But working with professor Scott Bryson, Mount St. Mary’s first-year students are putting L.A. literature on the map. Cataloging works that range from detective novels to memoirs, these students have developed a website dedicated to “Mapping the Literary Landscape of Los Angeles” — check it out at www.msmc.la.edu/pages/1761.asp.

Imagine what these students will do as sophomores.

Learning How to Learn

What makes a great professor?

There are as many answers to this question as there are Mount St. Mary’s students. In fact, you will likely find that each semester will bring new favorites among the faculty who teach your classes. But there is one characteristic that all great teachers share: a willingness to learn alongside their students. Your Mount St. Mary’s professors see learning as a lifelong adventure, and their enthusiasm is catching.

What’s more, you can count on ample individualized attention from your professors. Small classes sizes — averaging just 20 students; help — but our faculty members don’t limit their commitment to class time only. From a study sessions before a big exam to mentoring on a research program, you’ll find that Mount St. Mary’s faculty are happy to help.

The right tools

Whether it’s the latest in lab equipment, software to create a powerful presentation, or a library the links you to the world’s best collections, the right tools are an important part of a top-quality college education. But it’s not enough for a college or university to have the equipment — you also want to be sure that the school you choose lets you use these resources. Unlike many schools that reserve their best equipment for graduate students or faculty, the Mount gives undergraduates top priority for all our best tools. Just as our most outstanding faculty members will teach your classes, our best equipment will be in your hands.

So you bring your mind. We’ll supply the rest.

Creating new knowledge

One of the best ways to acquire new knowledge is to immerse yourself in creating it. At Mount St. Mary’s, our students are active researchers, taking leading roles in projects that explore new uses for drugs, uncover the literary side of Los Angeles, document marginalized voices, and much more.

Since the research enterprise is especially important in science, the Mount offers exceptional research opportunities for science students. Our Summer Research fellowships give students the opportunity to become part of the investigation teams in sites such as:

  • The American Heart Association
  • The National Institutes of Health
  • The National center for Genome Research
  • UCLA
  • The Harvard School of Public Health
  • CalTech
  • The New York University School of Medicine

Is it any wonder that our graduates enjoy great placement rates in medical school and graduate programs in the sciences?

Where can you go with a Mount St. Mary’s science degree?

(a real e-mail from Mount student Heather Yonutas, ’06)

Dear Tiff,

I have to be short, since I am in South Africa for now with the International Mission on Medicine program and will be leaving to travel around and learn more about the HIV/AIDS epidemic and health disparities in the country. It has been a life-changing experience. When I return to the U.S. I will once again be working at UCLA in biochemistry as well as the AIDS clinic, where we are specifically looking at drug interactions of patients with AIDS who have cancer as well. While all of this is going on, I am studying for the medical-school admissions test and taking a summer school class — silly me!

I am sorry but my time at this Internet café is almost up. I miss you and everyone else at the Mount. Bye for now,

Heather

Equipped for success

An education is only as good as the resources it places in its students’ hands — and that’s why the Mount is committed to excellent facilities for student use. From first-rate science labs to art studios that inspire to computer labs with the latest in hard- and software, Mount St. Mary’s equips you to excel.

Community and Compassion

You’ve heard it said that knowledge is power. At the Mount, we take it a step further. We believe that knowledge is the power to do good. An education that doesn’t inspire you to take up the concerns of others, to shoulder a little of the world’s burden, is an education wasted.

Every experience at Mount St. Mary’s, from classes to clubs, will ask you to see the world as yours to change. Your education here will require you to integrate thought and action, belief and understanding, heart and mind. You’ll be better for it. So will the world.

Here’s a paradox:

How can you be in a place where diversity is all around you but no one is diverse?

Give up? It’s because no ONE person is diverse. Diversity is a characteristic of groups, not individuals. At the Mount, we value diversity and we always have — our student body reflects that clearly. But we recognize that it takes a group — a collection of one-of-a-kind people — to create true diversity. So just as strongly as we encourage diversity, we encourage each of our students to become exactly who she is meant to be.

“What I love most about my job, as a psychologist working with Latino children who have experienced trauma, is providing the support the children need to overcome their experiences and find their way through to a brighter side of life. To me the gift of empathizing with another human being is the vital skill that Mount St. Mary’s has taught me.”

—Maria Avila, ’91, psychologist

Home away from home

You’ll feel right at home in residence halls that enjoy a strong sense of community. Neighbors feel more like sisters at Mount St. Mary’s, and you’ll find there’s always someone around to share a laugh, a late-night bite, or the latest news from home. Visit our residence-hall website at www.msmc.la.edu/pages/361.asp

Interested in creating social change through public policy or government? Then you won’t want to miss our Public Leaders education Network (PLEN) program, which whisks you off to Washington, D.C. for a week or more of interacting with legislators and policymakers. Watch a case being argued in front of the Supreme Court or listen in as members of Congress debate a thorny issues. Be thinking, all the while, of how you can make things better.

Preparing for the Future

Preparing women of influence

It used to be that women who wished to lead had only men to serve as mentors and models for their pursuits. But now women have generated their own models for leadership, and have given rise to a whole new kind of leadership, one that calls not for a loud voice, but for deep commitment, strong skills, and keen vision.

Mount St. Mary’s gives future leaders all these tools, so women can lead from their hearts, and not by following others.

A foundation of knowledge and services

To come: Concentrate on the access to professionals and experiences brought to campus to prepare students, as well as services offered through career placement, etc.

Double dose of the Mount at Harvard

Twins Sonia and Miriam Salgado, both members of the Mount’s class of 2004, don’t do everything alike — but they did both decide on Harvard University for graduate school. And both credit the Mount with helping to inspire lofty goals for their future. “My adviser really pushes her students to go for their dreams,” says Sonia, who double majored in liberal studies and American studies. “And Mount St. Mary’s gives you the broad background that graduate schools really notice,” adds Miriam, a liberal studies and philosophy major who won a prestigious Rockefeller Fellowship to support her education.

Where in the world will you work?

With a degree from the Mount, doors will open. Some of our recent graduates have found jobs with:

  • Bank of America

Location is Everything

Learning on location takes on a whole new meaning at a school that gives you a world-class city for a backyard.

One of the best things a college can do for you is connect you to the world around you, and when that world is one of the most exciting cities on the planet, the connections can be unbelievable. Want an internship? Consider the thousands of options outside our doors. Seeking your first ‘real’ job? The possibilities are endless. Looking for weekend adventure? Shopping, surfing, hiking, biking, stargazing — it’s all here.

A winning neighborhood

You can’t beat Los Angeles for excitement and entertainment, and for glitz and glamour, no place tops the City of Angels either.

But beneath its showy exterior, Los Angeles is a city with layers of amazing opportunities to explore, making it a winning neighborhood for your whole-person education.

With the Getty and other museums, plus highly regarded musical and theater ensembles and dance troupes, Los Angeles is paradise for arts lovers. The city has nature covered, too, with gardens, zoos, an aquarium, and more. And diversity — Los Angles has long beckoned people from across the Americas and beyond the Pacific to create a multi-cultural community that makes an exciting and enriching backdrop for your studies.

Two terrific campuses

Mount St. Mary’s gives you two beautiful campuses to consider. The Chalon campus, perched in the Brentwood hills overlooking Santa Monica, is home to our baccalaureate programs. And situated on peaceful, wooded grounds in L.A.’s historic West Adams District, our Doheny campus houses associate, graduate, and educational credential programs.

Is our face familiar?

If you have the feeling you’ve seen the beautiful Chalon campus of Mount St. Mary’s before, maybe it's because you have. With its striking Spanish colonial architecture, the campus has achieved a bit of Hollywood celebrity. In fact, Chalon is currently starring as Harbor High on “The O.C.” And if you have seen any of these movies —

  • The Princess Diaries
  • Shop Girl
  • Road to Perdition
  • Catch Me If You Can
  • Alex & Emma
  • Payback
  • Gunshy
    • Alias
    • JAG
  • or these TV shows:

— you’ve seen our Doheny campus.

Useful financial-aid websites

The World Wide Web offers some great financial-aid information for students and their families — be beware! The Web is also full of misinformation, outdated sources, and even some rip-offs.

To be safe, never supply a scholarship service with credit-card information, and remember that applying for federal financial aid is always free.

To get started, take a look at these sites:

The ABCs of applying for financial aid at the Mount

A) APPLY.

Ask your high-school or college counselor for a Free Federal Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) in mid-December. Complete and submit the form, listing Mount St. Mary’s (code #001243) as a recipient of your information.

B) REVIEW.

After we receive your FAFSA information, we will prepare an award letter, detailing the type and amount of aid you are being offered. Review this offer and supply any additional documentation requested.

C) WRAP UP.

Once you know how much aid you are offered, you can calculate what you and your family will need to contribute to the cost of your education. Our counselors can help. You can also search for outside scholarships to lighten your load even further.

Questions? We are never more than a call away.

Let’s start with the end. When you graduate from the Mount you will receive a degree. Mount St. Mary’s offers degrees at three levels. The first two are undergraduate degrees:

Associate’s degrees take about two years, or four semesters to complete. The Mount’s Associate in Arts (A.A.) prepare students to enter the job market or to continue on in a four-year degree program. Mount St. Mary’s offers many A.A. degree programs.

Bachelor’s degrees are four-year undergraduate degrees, and are sometimes called baccalaureate degrees. Mount St. Mary’ offers the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), the Bachelor of Music (B.M.), the Bachelor of Science (B.S.), and the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.). These degrees prepare students for careers in a wide range of fields, or for entry into graduate, medical or law school.

Mount St. Mary’s also offers degrees at the graduate level:

Master’s degrees signify the mastery of an area of study through additional years of study beyond the bachelor’s degree. Many master’s programs take two years to complete. The Mount offers four master’s degrees.

Credential potential

In many career fields, a credential may be required. Mount St. Mary’s offers credential programs in:

Education
Gerontology
Physical Therapy
Religious Studies

Whatever you are meant to do in life, a Mount St. Mary’s degree will get you there.

Degree programs

American Studies, B.A.
Explore the social, cultural, and political characteristics that define America. An interdisciplinary field (one that combines courses from more than one discipline), American Studies is excellent choice for those interested in law, education, public policy — even marketing.

Art, A.A., B.A.
Forget the starving artist idea. Today’s art graduates are in demand as graphic designers, museum curators, administrators, and much more. Both our degree programs feature internships at the world-famous Getty Museum, giving you even more career power.

Biochemistry,B.S.
Biochem has emerged as one of the majors of choice for pre-med students, but your command of this field, with its emphasis on cellular processes at the molecular level, equips you with analytical skills that can take you almost anywhere.

Biological Sciences, B.A., B.S.
What’s more fascinating than the study of life? You’ll examine living organisms from the molecular level to the level of group interaction. A smart choice for pre-med, pre-vet and pre-physical therapy students.

Business Administration, A.A., B.A.
It’s a new world for women in business —and the Mount can prepare you to excel. Choose from five program areas: accounting; international business; language; culture and business; management or marketing. Internships give you the chance to put knowledge into practice — and to make valuable career contacts.

Chemistry, B.A., B.S.
Few fields can match chemistry for analytical rigor, and in today’s job market a chemistry degree can be a first step to a career in the pharmaceutical industry, in research, nutrition, or clinical technology. Of course graduate study in medicine, dentistry or another field is also open to you too.

Child Development, B.A.
Working with children and their families is challenging, demanding — and maybe more rewarding than almost any other field. Our child development program equips you to work with children in education, health care, social service and child care settings.

Computer Information Science, Minor
It’s simple: No matter what career field you choose you will be better prepared with a command of computing skills in that area. This minor equips you with an understanding of networking, multimedia, electronic information systems, the Internet, and more. Put power at your fingertips.

Education/Liberal Studies, A.A., B.A., credential
The Mount excels at educating teachers who go on to successful career at levels from pre-school to college instruction. Early childhood education is offered at the Doheny campus and students may earn the Children’s Center Instructional Permit as well. Best of all, you can complete your degree and credential — and student-teach— all within four years.

English, B.A.
Love the language? Does literature stir you in a way that television never could? Do you long to write novels or poems or magazine articles? The Mount St. Mary’s English major teaches you to read critically, to write clearly and gracefully, and, perhaps most of all, to think profoundly about the world around you. What career can you pursue? Name one that doesn’t require those skills!

Gerontology, B.A.
In society the field of gerontology is one of the fastest-growing today, but at the Mount, it’s been a focus for years. Our respected program, affiliated with sociology, gives you insights into human development over the course of the lifespan, while preparing you for careers ins social service, health care, case management, government agencies and much more.

History, B.A.
Long a traditional choice for pre-law students, history is also an excellent way to sharpen reasoning, research, and communication skills while you explore some of the most consequential episodes in humankind’s past. Whether you want to teach high-school students or run for president (or both), a history degree is a great first step.

Human Services, A.A.
Affiliated with the sociology department, this degree program exposes you to current concepts in youth services, justice system, youth services, gerontology, and more. You can head straight into a job in one of these fields, or continue your education with a four-year program

Leadership and Women’s Studies, Minor
Why not offer a minor in what we do best: educate women to lead. The Mount’s nationally known program is open to students in all majors and includes great experiences outside the classroom, including prominent speakers, conferences, and internships.

Mathematics, B.A.
Quantitative reasoning ability is in high demand in every career sector today. A math major is a wonderful foundation for a job in business, research, and education. It’s also a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the power and beauty of numbers.

Modern Languages & Culture, B.A.
This program is rooted in our belief that languages don’t exist in a vacuum — they both reflect and shape the culture around them. Master French and Spanish at the same time you come to understand the Francophone and Spanish-speaking cultures and communities of the world. Then, in your junior year, go abroad and immerse yourself in both language and culture.

Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, our programs attract excellent faculty, both in the studio and in the classroom. You can also choose a certificate in music ministry.

Nursing, B.S.N
Nursing is more than a career — it’s a service to humankind. That’s why we center our well-respected program on the Roy Adaptation Model of Nursing, which teaches nurse to integrate the biological, social, social, and spiritual dimensions of the people with whom they work. No wonder that our students enjoy excellent pass rates on the nursing licensure exam.

Philosophy, B.A.
One of the world’s oldest disciplines, philosophy remains relevant through the ages by providing unparalleled opportunities to learn logic, critical thinking, and effective communication. Prepare for law school, graduate school, or a career with this degree — and find your life enriched.

A pre-law minor affiliated with this program ensures you have the analytic and expository skills to succeed in law school. Don’t miss the chance to go to Washington, D.C. with the Public Leader Education Network (PLEN) program, another great opportunity for any political science major.

Psychology, B.A.
Psychology is a field with rich opportunities for both pure and applied work. Our program lets you choose to emphasize counseling, clinical psych, or child development. Research is a big part of the program, with many students seizing the opportunity to present original findings at conferences. Internships are available in a wide range of settings.
