Located in Los Angeles, the heart of the film industry, Mount St. Mary's College offers the students unprecedented access to a myriad of educational and career opportunities in film, television, and broadcasting. Our students have gone on to secure positions in news broadcasting, feature film production, music video production, radio broadcasting, and web development.

Program Philosophy

The philosophy of the Mount St. Mary's College Film and Social Justice Program is that while there are many film programs that sufficiently technically train future filmmakers, no program in the country today focuses on educating filmmakers to become advocates of social justice in the world. The founders of Mount St. Mary's College--The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet--provide the moral and ethical basis for our program mission of educating filmmakers to use their creativity and skills to contribute to addressing the profound social injustice issues of our time.

Courses

The Documentary Film and Social Justice Program is designed as a collaboration between the liberal arts education of Mount St. Mary's College and training in the art of film production. The typical small class size at the Mount means a high level of one-on-one instruction and mentoring by faculty. In addition, early hands-on experience in story development, filming, sound mixing, and film editing occurs. Unlimited access to production labs is available to all film students.

Filmmaking Tools

Students will learn the art of filmmaking using state-of-the-art digital cameras, film editing software (Final Cut Pro), and sound mixing equipment and software (Pro-Tools). It is an expectation that every student will create a portfolio of short documentaries prior to graduation. The Mount’s newly refurbished Hannon Theater possesses all necessary amenities for screening students’ work, in conjunction with the Human Rights Film Festival, sponsored by the Film Program, as well as our regular film series of each academic year.
