Language & Culture
WelcomeWelcome to the Department of Language and Culture's webpage at Mount Saint Mary's College. We are proud to have graduated students who have become successful translators, interpreters, elementary and high school teachers, university and college professors, social workers, psychologists, and business entrepreneurs. You can become one of them by studying with us!
AboutIn our general Majors or in our Spanish Studies with Translation Emphasis, Spanish Studies with Chicano Emphasis or French Studies with International Studies Emphasis Majors (See Degrees). Our Spanish, French and Japanese programs are carefully designed to provide students with the necessary tools to interact effectively in a multicultural, social or professional environment. In order to sharpen their skills, students are encouraged to use the latest technology, participate in service learning activities in the community, national and international intenships, and to study abroad. In this age of globalization, communicating with the rest of the world has never been more important. For communication to truly take place, we must understand not only the words but what is behind them. We must understand how people of different cultures think and act, and why. Culture is the set of beliefs, values, traditions, and history that shape the minds and rituals of any given group. Understanding cultures and becoming proficient in various languages opens a wide array of career opportunities in any aspect of a service career such as health, education, law and order, politics, and in business. Our department also encourages students to major in an interdisciplinary program B.A. Spanish Studies and Business Administration and double major with other disciplines.
