Leadership in Diversity
President's Statement:
In the Mount community, we believe that diversity is part of excellence. By excellence, we mean a kind of competence that is not just a quality of each individual in our community, but a quality of the community itself, and the constituencies that make up our community. Diversity and excellence are values in the Mount community that are interfused and mutually supportive.
In the wider sense, diversity includes the panoply of gifts, talent, opinion, and backgrounds of each person. Without losing our sensitivity to diversity in this wider sense, we also, more specifically, seek out and nurture the value of diversity with historically underrepresented groups and persons of color. We affirm the value of diversity in the consideration of the constitution of all constituencies of the college, including the board of trustees, the faculty, the administration and staff, the student body, and the various advisory committees that help us carry on our work in higher education. Diversity is an essential aspect of the excellence implied in "providing a superior education" as affirmed in our mission statement and strategic plan.
We welcome and encourage debate, dialogue, and discussion of issues related to excellence and diversity. As we learn and grow together, we respect differences of opinion and expression. The knowledge and perspectives of each one of us in a diverse community is valuable and needed. We look forward to hearing contributions to the ongoing discussion that are made in terms and in tones that are insightful, respectful, and thoughtful.
Diversity itself and the discussion of diversity are producing new knowledge, new self-understanding, and new respect for differences in the Mount community. The cherishing of diversity, as a CSJ, a Catholic, and an American ideal, is a common value that serves as a foundation for working together toward the common good.
