What types of content can I add and how would I use them?

Types of content on the Lessons tab are:

Folder

  • A folder is used for organizing your content. Other content items can be created within a Folder.
For example, create a folder named “General Information” in your Lessons tab and upload your course general information into it.

Page

  • Page item is used to share information with the class. A page may include images and/or formatted with titles, lists, and colors. You may copy your page content from word, using the HTML editor.
  • Why use the Page content item and not upload a word document (for example)?
    • When uploading an external file, such as a word document. Students must download the file to their computer and the following issues may arise:
      • Changes in a document require re-uploading them to the course.
      • Students must have MS Office installed on their computer.
      • MS Office version may not be compatible with the file, resulting in corrupt view or file not opening.
      • Students can modify the file
    • By using the Page item, the content is stored on Angel, you may edit the information without having to upload a new version. Students may view or print the information, but cannot make any changes.

Link

  • Link item allows you to direct your students to an external resource or website

Survey

  • Survey allows you to conduct anonymous polling of your students opinions, feedback and responses.

File

  • File option allows you to share files with your students. Students will be prompted to download those files.
  • In case of a PowerPoint Presentation, we recommend uploading the presentation as a handout, to protect your presentation from being modified, and to allow students to print an outline to add their notes.
    • Click here for detailed instructions on uploading a handout version of your presentation to Angel.

Drop Box

  • A drop box provides an area resource for student to submit assignments online. These assignments can be accessed by the instructor online, and are then reviewed and graded.

Turnitin Drop Box

  • Turnitin drop box is a plagiarism prevention system, which compares your students' papers to databases, journals, publications and internet resources and produces an originality report.

Discussion Forum

  • A Discussion Forum allows the instructor to facilitate a discussion between students, either as a continuation to a discussion that began in class, or for discussing an event or idea relating to the course.  Students can read, think and share their thoughts with others, responding to fellow students input.

Blog

  • A blog allows a person to share a thought, idea or reflection with the course, allowing others to comment on it.  A blog can be used in a course for students to write and reflect about a specific topic or concept discussed in class, allowing other students to comment.

Wiki

  • Wikis are a collaborative working space, where the whole class can create a glossary, dictionary or work on a joined project, allowing all members to edit all entries and comment on them.
    • A wiki could be compared to a book, written by various contributers (students and teacher)
In order to organize the book (wiki), the editor (teacher) sets guidelines for all chapters (entries) to follow, keeping a unified structure.
Contributers then add tags (index keywords) for bettr navigation of the content (such as an index at the end of a book).

Assessment

  • Assessments enable online exams/quizzes for your course. When using this tool you may set a time limit, scramble the order of questions and answers and control the way your students view the assessment.

What are the different options within the Course Content Editor?

When a content item is added, the editor displays in tab format. Each tab contains common fields that are used for each content item.

  • Content Tab - The Content tab provides the page settings and link settings for the content item you are creating. Page settings contain information about the content item such as Title, Subtitle, Directions, etc. Link settings are used if you want to change the icon displayed for the content item; add a help link for the content item; or direct the content item to open in a new page.
  • Access Tab - The Access tab provides settings for access, viewing and editing content items. This editor allows the instructor to set tracking on content items to control information about visits to a lesson item. This editor also determines who can view the lesson item.
  • Assignments Tab - The Assignment tab provides access to creating Milestones and Gradebook settings for the content item that is being created. This allows the instructor the ability to create milestones and gradebook items from within the content item.

    • Editable By - allows you to define which types of users should be able to edit the access setting for an item. The default setting is to allow all course/group editors to edit these settings. It can also be set to author/owner to further restrict editing rights
