Our students are doing a lot. We'd like to share some of their experiences with you. The internship and research opportunities that are available to Mount students allow them to explore and gain the 'true' experiences that make their Mount education come full circle.

Biennial Symposium of Intercultural Cancer Council

Sr. Annette attended the 9th Biennial Symposium of the Intercultural Cancer Council which was held in Washington D.C. from March 24th to the 28th.

Rockefeller Scholars

Announcing Elaine Gonzalez and Reggie Webster as the recipients of the prestigious Rockefeller Brothers Fund Fellowship for Minority Students Entering the Teaching Profession. The award includes a $2500 stipend for a junior-year summer project related to teaching and a $12,000 to $16,000 scholarship for full-time graduate work in education or a related field.

Both Elaine and Reggie are Liberal Studies majors who are enrolled in the Multiple Subject Teaching Credential Program. In August, they will attend the Rockefeller Brothers Foundation summer workshop in Washington, D.C. with their mentors, Pat Disterhoft and Sr. Teresita Espinoza.

Univision Tour

This has definitely been a tremendous year for our students. A vast number of them have successfully secured and engaged in internships with prominent organizations. The experiences they have gained and continue to benefit from are truly priceless.

On Friday, April 16, 2004, a group of twenty students experienced first hand what it takes to run the nations #1 Spanish speaking network. KMEX- Channel 34, Univision warmly opened it’s doors to our students and proved their dedication to mentoring and empowering these young women. The visit was a total success.

A representative of their community and government relations department, and Mount intern, Lorena Lopez, greeted our students and introduced them to a spokesperson from the Human Resources department. They explained the detailed process of effectively applying for internship positions within the station.

One of the many highlights of the day was Paula Rosado, Bureau Chief for the network’s national news magazine show titled, Primer Impacto. She gave a detailed talk on what it takes to succeed in network television, and the challenges attached to working in the demanding television industry. She spoke specifically about her role as a journalist. She was both extremely inspirational and insightful.

In the newsroom, Moana Ramirez, Assignment Manager, explained the daily operations associated with producing a successful local news show and attracting diverse viewers. She spoke about the importance of ratings and the sweeps period to the vitality of the station. Furthermore, students also met a reporter and saw a news anchor in action. The visit ended with a tour of the station, which included a visit to the set of their morning show Primer Edicion.

FBI INTERNSHIP

FBI Summer 2004 Internship Recipient:

Congratulations to Montserrat Moran for her tremendous accomplishment and successfully getting through the extremely rigorous selection process!

Her internship will provider her with housing at Catholic University of America in Washington D.C., paid travel expenses up to $500.00, and a salary for the entire summer.

We hope that she will share all her exciting experiences upon returning to campus in the fall. Good Luck Montserrat!
