Welcome to the Office of the Provost!

From the Provost:

We continue to implement the initiatives and goals articulated in the Educational Plan that will accomplish the stated strategic intent of the 2001-2006 Strategic Plan of the College. This Educational Plan specifies actions that taken between fall 2004 and 2007 to pace our progress and accomplishment.

Long committed to educational excellence, in 2003-2004 faculty determined the specific steps necessary to “raise the bar” of academic performance and achievement among our students. The initiatives in the Educational Plan address the challenges presented by learners at both ends of the preparation continuum: those who arrive at college under-prepared and those with the potential and preparation for advanced academic work.

Initiatives in the Educational Plan:

  1. Increase the full-time faculty
  2. Develop academic skills
  3. Assess student learning
  4. Increase academic challenge
  5. Center for Teaching and Learning
  6. Center for the Sciences
  7. Enhance enrollment capacity
  8. Relocate Weekend College
  9. Increase praxis and interdisciplinarity

An initiative in quantitative literacy (QL), funded by The James Irvine Foundation resulted in a new graduation requirement and newly-designed courses that will fulfill the new requirement and which focus attention on QL concepts and skills. Comparative QL test scores will indicate the success of these efforts in the next few years and will guide the faculty as it evaluates the strength of our QL education.

It is essential that we invest in our faculty as we increase enrollment and raise the bar for students. The focused faculty-student interaction that has characterized a Mount education depends upon sufficient full-time faculty to engage our students. It is time to increase the size of the full-time faculty and invest in faculty development across academic careers. This plan includes steps for pacing the growth of the faculty with our enrollment as well as establishing a systematic program of faculty development as we work toward founding a Center for Teaching and Learning.

We are excited about working with each member of the College community to provide “a superior education enhanced by an emphasis on building leadership skills and fostering a spirit to serve others” (Mission Statement).
