Philosophy provides us with the tools to discover, examine, and evaluate insights into the meaning of knowledge, personal identity, creativity, fundamental concepts, relationships, nature, the structure of institutions, policies, values, and beliefs. This major serves as an excellent preparation for graduate study or a career in college teaching, law, bioethics, medicine, computer programming, culture studies, social sciences, or religious studies. Philosophy provides a strong foundation for careers in education, business, research, writing, or counseling. The Philosophy department encourages and helps students to arrange double majors, especially with the departments of Art, Political Science, Business, English, and Religious Studies. Other double majors with philosophy can be arranged. The Philosophy Department at Mount St. Mary's College offers the student the opportunity to get a bachelor of art's degree in Philosophy. You can either select a traditional course of study or an track. If you wish to go on in Philosophy, you may want to choose a program that develops the skills that would most help you in graduate school. If you seek a career in law, medicine, business, women's studies, or interdisciplinary studies, you may want to choose the applied philosophy track. All of our Philosophy faculty members are devoted teachers, who give a great deal of attention to individual students. The small class size allows us to get to know all our students and closely follow the course of study of our majors, so they get a strong foundation in Philosophy. All our Philosophy courses are taught by faculty members, not graduate students. One of the advantages of a small college is that we know each other and can help students develop their talents. For Philosophy majors and minors, we have advisement by full-time faculty in Philosophy. |
