'Coming home' to the Mount: Homecoming 2013

description of photo

Current MSMC students joined alums at The Circle for some music and dance fun on Homecoming afternoon.

Hundreds of Mount St. Mary’s College alums and students joined in this year’s Homecoming celebration on the College’s Chalon Campus.

Among the highlights: a champagne brunch and awards ceremony inside the Mount’s recently renovated Campus Center, the annual Founders Day Mass, and a first look at the College’s new stone-laid plaza topping Chalon’s under-construction Grand Entrance.

Other fun included an afternoon wine-and-cheese reception, and a series of workshops that included topics such as comedy improv, cupcake decorating, social media and tai chi. Alums and current Athenians also had the chance to interact during several activities in The Circle, including musical performances and a dance contest.

Most important, of course, were the opportunities for alums to reconnect – both with each other and with the campus they once called home.

“Homecoming at the Mount is truly like coming home, I feel renewed,” says Jennifer Sampson-Shay ’01. “I had a wonderful day, and just walking in the door, it hit me how much I have grown in the 12 years since my graduation.”

The 2013 Outstanding Alum Awards went to the following Mount alums:

  • Outstanding Alum for Professional Achievement: Alejandra Ceja ’96, current director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics
  • Outstanding Alums for Service to the College: Mickey (Leahy) Payne ’64 and Peggy (Leahy) Starr ’64.
  • Rising Star Award: Karina Macias ’10, current city councilor for the City of Huntington Park, Calif.
