Mount St. Mary’s Department of Language and Culture is enjoying the insights of an additional professor this spring semester. Chinese instructor Jing Zhang is in the middle of her term as the Mount’s visiting scholar at the College’s Chalon Campus.
A professor of English in the School of Foreign Languages at China’s Gannan Normal University since 1992, Zhang is also the deputy director of Gannan Normal’s division of International Cooperation & Exchange. She received her MA in English language and literature from Shanghai Normal University in 2003, focusing on British and American literature.
“My interest lies primarily in American cultural history and American literature before World War I,” Zhang says. “And my current research focuses on America’s early struggle for cultural independence.”
Zhang’s presence at the Mount offers opportunities for all involved. In addition to offering her expertise in the College’s Department of Language and Culture, she is also speaking at seminars and as a guest lecturer in other courses. MSMC students will receive a new perspective on American history, as well.
Meanwhile, Zhang has the opportunity to conduct research and learn from her American counterparts. After finishing her term as a visiting scholar, she will return to Gannan Normal, where she will incorporate the results of her new research into her teaching of American culture and history to Chinese students.
“I am so delighted to have Jing here with us,” says Montserrat Reguant, chair of MSMC’s Department of Language and Culture. “This is such a benefit for both of us. She is learning and researching while she’s here, and we are able to gain from her expertise and knowledge.”
