Out of a 17-team competition, Mount St. Mary’s senior duo of Claudia Garcia ’14 and Viridiana Aceves ’14 won the 2014 California Moot Court Classic.
The event was held in May at MSMC’s Chalon Campus, and included teams from the University of Southern California; California State University, Long Beach; California State University, Fresno; and Westwood College. Garcia and Aceves claimed the championship in a showdown against the two-person team from Cal State Long Beach.
The California Moot Court Classic began with all teams arguing both sides of an appellate court case, with judges questioning their positions. Two MSMC teams made it into the final rounds of the competition. In addition to the Garcia-Aceves team, freshmen Karla Ballesteros ’17 and Melanie Sava ’17 advanced to the later rounds. All four students are majoring in political science and minoring in pre-law.
Sava and Garcia also took home Best Oral Advocate Awards, with Sava finishing in first place overall and Garcia in fourth. The College’s Moot Court and Mock Trial teams are coached by Dr. Helen Boutrous, an associate professor and the chair of history and political science at Mount St. Mary’s.
The other members of the Mount’s 2014 Moot Court team are: Jessica Ditmore, Maria Flores, Jacqueline B. Swezey and Susan Velasco.
