How can I find out if I am Clinically Depressed?

Am I Depressed?

Students sometimes wonder if the sadness that they experience is actually clinical depression. Often people use the word "depressed" to mean "sad." Someone might say "I'm depressed," when they simply mean, "I'm sad today."

Clinical depression is different because is lasts for at least two weeks and is characterized by a combination of the following symptoms:

  1. sadness most of the day, nearly every day;
  2. a loss of interest or pleasure in nearly all of your activities;
  3. changes in appetite and/or weight;
  4. sleep difficulties;
  5. feeling tense or irritable often or having difficulty accomplishing tasks that you were once able to do;
  6. fatigue or a sense of heaviness throughout the day;
  7. difficulty concentrating or indecisiveness;
  8. thoughts about death or suicide.

If you are an MSMC student and wonder if you are clinically depressed, we encourage you to make an appointment with one of the MSMC counselors. A confidential assessment can be made in one session with suggestions for positive steps to take. To schedule an appointment on the Chalon Campus, call (310) 954-4110; on the Doheny campus, call (213) 477-2668.
