Our training philosophy views Counseling & Psychological Services (CPS) as a welcoming and supportive university setting committed to training. The general purpose is to guide budding psychologists to appropriate levels of clinical competence and professional conscience given their level of experience. Our training values learning through observation, mentoring, modeling, didactic training, and supervision.
In support of the mission of the University and the Student Affairs division, CPS is committed to serving and enhancing the holistic development of our students as well as educating and consulting with the college community.
Full-time Internship: We offer three full-time (40 hrs/wk) pre-doctoral internship positions, which serve both the Doheny and Chalon campuses. The hours are M-Th 8:30am to 5:00pm and F 8:00am to 4:30pm. The stipend is $12,000 for the year. The internship begins August 17, 2015 and ends May 31, 2016 (9.5 months) in order to complete the 1,500 hours necessary for licensure in California. Please note the internship provides 1,500 hours and some graduate schools require more than this for graduation. Please confirm with your school that the 1,500 hours will satisfy its requirements or that the school is willing to grant exceptions for CAPIC sites that offer 1,500 hour full-time internships before applying.
Psychology interns provide a range of services to both undergraduate and graduate students. In the process, interns solidify their knowledge and culturally-sensitive skills in clinical assessment, individual therapy, crisis intervention, consultations, and outreach. Additionally, interns will have a basic applied knowledge of CA laws and APA ethical guidelines as well as develop an early sense of professional identity. Common student concerns that interns address include depression, anxiety, academic performance, family and romantic relationships, eating disorders, substance abuse, adjustment disorders, intergenerational conflict and low self-esteem. Multicultural approaches are expected to be integrated into all areas, as needed.
The majority of the psychology intern’s time at CPS is devoted to providing direct clinical service. Forty to sixty percent of the time each week is devoted to counseling clients in short-term therapy and crisis intervention. Interns carry two long-term clients in their caseloads to gain richer clinical perspectives and skills.
Interns have opportunities to consult with the Mount St. Mary's College community (also known as the “Mount”), such as parents, staff and faculty. As a result, interns gain increased competence in providing culturally-sensitive education and guidance. The main purpose is to help the community assist our students in removing obstacles and optimizing holistic development.
Outreach is considered a key component of our work at the Mount. The purpose is to reach the underserved and provide psycho-educational prevention programs that will increase the well-being of our community. Outreach opportunities are numerous at CPS. Each year, we receive requests from different departments, such as the Orientation Committee, Learning Resource Center, Women’s Leadership, Residence Life, Student Activities, and professors. Interns develop liaison relationships with other departments and learn to develop culturally-appropriate prevention programs. Some programs are collaborative efforts, such as Take Back the Night, which is an annual sexual assault prevention program. Other programs, such as National Depression Screening Day, are sponsored solely by CPS. The diverse outreach opportunities provide trainees with a better understanding of the campus community and the development of a broader range of skills.
Interns attend didactic trainings weekly on clinical topics relevant to our emerging adult, college population. A sample of past topics includes Latino Psychology and Clinical Implications, Updates on Psychopharmacology, Evidence-Based Practice, and Crisis Intervention. Speakers include CPS staff as well as community psychologists. Relevant readings are provided.
Interns receive four hours of supervision each week, which include 2.5 hours of individual supervision and 1.5 hour of group supervision by licensed clinical psychologists. The interns will work with two different supervisors, enhancing their training experience. The staff of each campus also meets weekly for an hour for case conference/outreach supervision.
Predoctoral interns have the privilege of using university facilities, including the library, the campus cafes, the pools, and the gyms when a university ID is shown. In addition, discount rates are offered on bookstore merchandise and community cultural events. The parking fee is waived for predoctoral interns.
Interns are off typically for seven university holidays during the academic year and will get one week off during the winter break between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day. Sick leave time is also provided.
Mount St. Mary’s College is a private, Catholic college of approximately 2,700 students, the majority of whom are women. The students are diverse in terms of ethnicity, culture, socio-economic status, and life experience. For example, 47% of the students we serve are Latina/o, 22% are Asian/Pacific Islander, 15% are Caucasian, and 6% are African American.
The Chalon campus is nestled in the hills above Brentwood with beautiful views of Los Angeles and the coast. The historic Doheny campus is a magnificent enclave of Victorian homes converted into classrooms and offices. It is located near downtown Los Angeles.
Applicants having interest in outreach and consultation in a college setting, prior experience with performing intakes, and prior experience providing short-term psychotherapy are preferred. To apply to our Pre-doctoral Internship please include:
