I am delighted that you want to investigate further the possibility of majoring in English at Mount St. Mary's College, Los Angeles!
As an English major, you will enjoy reading a wide variety of writing, from journalistic non-fiction, to poetry, prose, and drama. In your classes, you study what it was like to live in earlier days, times very different from our own, and you will learn more about what it means to live in a post-post-modern age. I am not the first to remark that reading can serve as a kind of “arm-chair travel” where you can go back in time or shoot towards the future by merely reading a book.
Not only will you read a fascinating array of writing, but you will learn to develop and manipulate your “writerly” voice. You will have the remarkable opportunity to speak through the voices of others who might say what you are thinking or believe better than you can yourself.
Research is fundamental to the English student. In your English classes, you will learn to locate sources relevant to your research and cite them accurately so as to enhance your academic integrity and to project your voice into the world. As you become ever more adept at literary analysis, crafting voice, and researching problems, you will hone those skills that will make you a valuable member of the workforce.
English is a gateway degree, and many of our English majors go on to graduate and law school. Many English majors eventually find jobs in advertising, business, education, journalism, public relations, the law, and radio/TV/film.
