Assessment

The Film & Social Justice Department’s assessment plan was developed collaboratively by our full-time and FTE faculty members and alums of the department. The plan is connected to the mission of the college and its founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. The department works to prepare students for professional careers and graduate school.

In order to succeed in our student outcome goals, students are strongly encouraged to utilize student support services, including the Learning Center, Career Services, Media Center, and technological support such as through various computer labs. They are made aware of our goals through syllabi and the Film & Social Justice website.

As a result of our assessment retreats (January and May) and feedback from instructors, students, and the assessment committee, we have made modifications and have expanded our number of outcomes and departmental goals. We will continue to adapt and revise if needed, based on our future assessment activities.

Outcome

Students will demonstrate ability to identify social justice issues and act as social advocates in addressing human rights violations through the use of media.

Outcome 1:
Demonstrate mastery of the concept of social justice and advocacy.

Outcome 2:
Demonstrate understanding of Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) Articles.

Students will understand the power and influence of media in society and be able to decode media products and their messages by identifying and analyzing their meanings and biases.

Outcome 1:
Demonstrate an understanding of the influence of mass media in society.

Outcome 2:
Students will be able to decode media products and messages.

Outcome 3:
Analyze the impact and evolution of technology on the media and film industry.

Students will apply basic artistic and technical skills in digital media creation.

Outcome 1:
Create a relevant and compelling story for media application.

Outcome 2:
Demonstrate basic technical skills in digital media production.

Outcome 3:
Apply ethical standards and practice in regards to copyright material.

Professional Competencies, was developed in order to better prepare students for the professional world. This goal consists of developing basic skills necessary for professional presentation for applicants for employment and/or graduate studies.

Outcome 1:
Students will be able to create a media industry professional portfolio appropriate to their future profession.

Outcome 2:
Students will be able to perform professionally in an internship setting.
