Students understand, and apply concepts of music theory to various types, styles, and forms of music literature for analysis, performance and composition

  1. Students know time and key signatures, scales, modes, intervals.

  2. Construct and perform melodies with appropriate phrases, cadences, periods

  3. Analyze and write two-part counterpoint

  4. Analyze and write diatonic and chromatic harmony

  5. Analyze and write selected examples of atonal music

  6. Analyze the structure of music literature of various types and styles

Students understand, recognize, appreciate, and are articulate about history and literature of music from antiquity to the present for performance, composition, and analysis

  1. Students are familiar with representative genres, styles, cultures, composers, and masterpieces of music from pre-historic times to the present, and from various geographical areas*

  2. Recognize stylistic features of music literature through score analysis, listening, and performing

  3. Are familiar with representative composers of a variety of eras, styles, and cultures

  4. Demonstrate proficiency in performing music of various styles and genres

  5. Compose music of various styles and genres with appropriate technic

  6. Command effective vocabulary to explain varieties of genres, styles, types, compositions, and composers

Students demonstrate musical understanding and skill by performing and conducting with accuracy, style, and sensitivity a vast repertoire of music literature whether vocal or instrumental

  1. Include varies genres, styles and periods in the repertoire performed

  2. Demonstrate technical and stylistic proficiency commensurate with chosen repertoire

  3. Observe appropriate stage presence

  4. Demonstrate appropriate ensemble interaction

  5. Demonstrate ability to follow and perform conducting signals

Students understand, recognize, appreciate, and are articulate about varieties of music and the fine arts as avenues of personal growth, knowledge, fulfillment and cultural integration

  1. Understand and apply the proper language of the fine arts

  2. Identify elements, types, forms, and periods of music and the fine arts*

  3. Are familiar with historical context and culture as an influence on artistic expression

  4. Recognize artistic expression as interpretation of culture
